Was Historic Greece an Egyptian colony?

The place did the traditional Greeks come from? Have been they born from a Dorian invasion of Indo-European audio system? Herodotus, father of historical past appears to say in any other case. He says that the Greeks acquired a lot of their tradition from Egypt and the Levant. Is he appropriate? The historical past of historical Greece and the character of heroes is a sophisticated matter. Cadmus the Phoenician founding father of Thebes is a hybrid determine. He’s an immigrant king who creates and controls residents “born out of the earth.” It was a Greek hero reminiscent of Cadmus –  not a god – who might be linked to myths which defined the origins of a individuals and might be embedded into tales of family tree and ethnicity. Right here we focus on Cadmus’ historical past, his myths and greater problems with Egyptian heritage and the Greek hero generally.

  1. many 'indo europeans' used the serpent for their symbol, and while they were the dominant warriors, phonecians were better at deceit and trickery. i daresay cadmus' story is entirely true (well, the latter parts). he was a phonecian who fought for and took part of greece. the answer is obviously both, the question is who was the majority and who had more influence? the pantheon and everything early is indo european. phonecian elements enter later with the new sun god apollo taking delphi etc. but the majority in both respects remains indo-european.

  2. Why do you use Phoenician to describe Cadmus? They’re from Canaan. Their own Greek descendants called the Canaanites “Phoenicians” after Phoenix. That makes Zeus Ba’al the Canaanite storm god. Who is also Apollo. Yes, the Stevens were Canaanites and Heracles is Melqart the tutelary god of Tyre aka Ba’al whom Elijah defeated at Mt. Carmel

  5. A lot of interesting things here. I think the answer is far more complicated than are they PIE or Egyptian. My issue with most historians is that they often ignore Astro and Geo theology when understanding history and social/culture development.

  6. The Phoenicians, being a mobile culture rather than a territorial nation, infiltrated the thinking of all the people who they influenced. Our modern notion of countries with clearly mapped frontiers is an impediment to understanding history, especially when considering the Phoenicians who were everywhere that mattered. Jumping forward to our own millenium we find them in Venice, the very name being almost identical, Phoenician/Venetian. Venice, built in an estuary was strategically inaccessible from behind and of course the sea was theirs anyway. They went north into Europe via Geneva, to Amaterdam, another waterlogged land and on to London, in an estuary, from the Tudors onwards. They are the molders of history, the sculptors of our modern world, and they are the same people. They never went anywhere, much less went away. They run planet earth. They own it.
Naming them is impossible, indeed tabu. Historically the names are legion, Hittites, Canaanites, Hebrews, Levantine, Greek, Syrian, Lebanese, Jewish. Place names do not apply to the case and hinder a useful understanding of their abstract agency over several thousand years beginning as the maritime extension of the Silk Road combined with their mathematical genius and their need for written records which produced their alphabetical lexicon as distinct from hyrogliphic ideagrams, which led on to the Greek alphabet and eventually the Latin, via the Etruscans, who also appear to have been Phoenician in origin.

  7. Land locked people hardly knew more than their local terrain and built grid cities, vertical walls and depended on the right angle at all times. The Sea People, the Phoenicians, lived a qualitatively separate reality in which everything around them was in motion, the sea, the stars, their ships, their horizons. Their ships, like stringed instruments, balanced tension and compression, while buildings deal with vertical compression and load bearing roofs.
They are better understood as the western maritime extension of the Silk Road. They dealt with several languages and currencies which fomented financial networking and developed into modern banking.

  8. Good content thank you.
Phoenicia is more rooted in activity than territory. Being a maritime culture they were not territorial. They founded staging posts and colonies wherever thay were functional to their networking. The Antikithera Mechanism demonstrates their superb grasp of abstract science requiring multiple skills such as instruments for astral observations, the correlation of the data accumulated, and the navigational applications of their ephemerides added to the ability to make an analogue computer encompassing the exact movements of the solar system. They could pin point eclipses 18 years in the future.
Another aspect of these talented people was their personal autonomy which eschewed dictatorial governance and is the basis for their rule based on collective debate later called democracy.
